Travel Sketching in Japan May 2020
Friday, May 8, 2020:Tuesday, May 19, 2020
An exciting 12 day tour of scenic Japan capturing the highlights in our travel Journals each day. A tour full of variety and beauty.
“What an extraordinary country Japan is!”
It is quite simply magical for its ability to defy your expectations routinely. You can be seeing the biggest craziest intersections in the world, and then stumble through a miniature door into an Alice In Wonderland themed-shop, as though you’d been swept off the street into a fairytale. Then you can drink coffee sitting next to an owl. Twenty owls in fact. You can chase hundreds of bubbles floating through the air in a park, see a Sumo-wrestling match, sit on a tatami mat on the floor in a Kimono, boggle at musical toilets, watch geishas totter past, see Lantern Festivals, incredible flower arrangements, crazy taxi doors, crazy-themed robot cafes, the freshest food in the world, ridiculous Cuteness everywhere, the politest people on earth and the oldest ancient historic temples.
It just goes on and on being different and fascinating.
Join Urban Sketchers Instructor KK Ch’ng as your expert Travel Sketching tutor giving daily demos, workshops and inspiration.
An internationally renowned full-time artist, KK Ch’ng’s – (see his blog here) loose, free, easy style is admired by over 28,000 followers on Instagram. Click here.
KK is famous for his Oriental style of teaching sketching through simple media such as bamboo and ink making free lines that let your hand roam. It is very liberating and the results are unpredictably pleasing. KK uses minimal watercolor to highlight lines and flow which is in the Oriental art tradition.
The art of Minimalism and Less is More. White space must have rythm and breathe in art
KK believes that there must always be balance in paintings. He will teach us to see, think and then draw.
We will be filling our travel journals with vignettes of temples, food, lanterns, deer, owls, dogs, geishas, people, plants, flowers, bamboo forests, Torii gates and so much more.
We will use dry brush technique, paint on traditional white rice paper and use graphite, twig and ink and watercolors.
KK travels the world instructing in Urban Sketching and Travel Sketching and teaches a range of sketching skills using mixed media, pen, ink, sticks and watercolour.
Born in Malaysia, he founded the Penang Urban Sketchers chapter and is a highly sought-after Instructor at each annual Urban Sketchers Symposium.
We begin our tour and meet your Japanese-speaking guide and your English-speaking artist KK at our hotel in the mega-bustle of Tokyo. Day 2 we all head out to explore and enjoy this dynamic city with its stunning architecture, its alleys and laneways, animal cafes, eye-poppingly delicious food, temples, shrines and superb parks and of course the world’s busiest crossing with over half a million people per day! Sketching sessions each afternoon with KK.
After 3 nights in Tokyo, it’s up to the still mountains of Shirakawago and Kanazawa, see Mt Fuji en route and stay in a traditional RYOKAN and have a hot tub Onsen experience and then the following day we train the next day down to wonderful Kyoto for 4 nights – everyone’s favourite Japanese city.
We will see Torii gates, deers, the Aoi festival, the lantern festival, markets, bamboo forests, see Zen Rock gardens and then on to Hiroshima, scenic Miyajima and the wonderful must-see Art Island before our tour ends in the city of Osaka.
This tour is designed for anyone who would like to have a slower-cooked tour of Japan with experts guiding and free time to immerse ourselves in the beauty, fascination and cultural differences of Japan and its people whilst sketching each day in our travel journals.
DO I NEED TO BE A TALENTED ARTIST?
Absolutely not. You will be there for the pure love of learning and sharing with a group of like-minded people and we all learn and create at our own pace. You can be a pure beginner and feel just as pleased with your output and learning as everyone else. KK will be there to teach, inspire and encourage you each day no matter what your skill and experience level. Our equipment is portable, watercolor based with some mixed media and designed to be quick, simple travel journal-style sketching to enhance your holiday
There is quite simply no more enjoyable way to travel!
The weather is mild and sunny at this time and perfect for our daily travel sketching demo and workshops in each location.
Partners are welcome to join a sketcher if they are sharing a room with a sketcher. There is so much to explore, to do, see and enjoy that you will never be bored whilst your partner sketches!
This tour is guided by our English-speaking local Japanese expert as well as having your experienced, professional Tour Manager Kate Stedman at all times making sure you are happy every day.
We will learn each place’s history and enjoy amazing Japanese cuisine inbetween sketching activities.

12 DAYS starting in TOKYO at 6 pm on May 8 and ending on May 19 in 2020 after breakfast in Okayama when you can train to OSAKA or back to TOKYO where you are free to travel onwards.
When booking flights please ensure you can arrive and depart within this time framework above.
PLEASE NOTE THE TOUR BEGINS AND ENDS IN DIFFERENT CITIES.
Our last night is in Okayama which is a 2 hour train ride from Osaka.
All the direct flights to Europe from Osaka International airport KIX depart in the morning.
(With Cathay Pacific, you can take afternoon flights from KIX to HKG then link up with your flights to many parts of Europe.)
You can catch the Shinkansen train from Okayama station departing 6:20, and you will arrive Osaka International (KIX) or Osaka Domestic (ITM) by 8:20 am on May 19.
Therefore international flights out of KIX need to be after 10:30 or domestic flights out of ITM need to be after 9:30 am that day.
To be safe international flights out of Osaka need to be booked in the afternoon/evening of May 19 (eg Cathay has one to Europe) to avoid any problems – or just stay a night in Osaka – or in Tokyo – before you fly out the next day on May 20.
You may wish instead to train elsewhere or continue travelling in Japan so we have left May 19 deliberately flexible to accommodate this.
Please contact us before you book flights for this tour to ensure the tour is going ahead.
French Fusion Travel reserves the right to cancel the tour and refund you your deposit up to 5 months (150 days) before the departure date of the tour.]
