Our tour starts in Lisbon on June 2 in 2019. Lisbon is a city of by-gone charm with century-old wooden trams and iron funiculars, age-old herbalists, haberdashers and tailors in an ornate city centre. Learn the history of this marvellous city.

As you can see on the map to the right, we travel up the coastline of Portugal from Lisbon staying in our favourite spots such as mystical mountainous Unesco world heritage Sintra. Further North to artistic Porto full of Delft Blue wall tiles, stunning graffiti art and funky architecture like its railway station and its Livreria where JK Rowling got her inspiration for the staircase in Harry Potter's Hogwart's castle.... and we visit and dine down at the stunning Ribeira port area with its mighty spanned bridge.
Our final 3 nights are in northern Spain in the famous pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela that is a literal step back in time a thousand years.
For anyone who has ever wanted to experience even a small part of El Camino or the Ancient Way this is an ideal opportunity to add-on a walk yourselves after our tour.
Our tours are all fully-escorted and designed for affordability, fun and safety in comfortable, relaxing  conditions.
Kate is your historian and tour manager who has taken several tours to Portugal and loves the region and its history and beauty. She will entertain you with fun facts and tales each day.

We cater for people who love history, food, culture and learning a creative skill - or just like to explore new places in a fun group. Each afternoon is free for you to amble, explore, climb, read, shop, paint, cook - whatever you'd like to do as we offer so many suggestions. We design activities for variety and interest and you are free to join us or take off on your own.

Non-sketchers are most welcome on this tour too.

Even if you have never put a pen on paper to sketch anything – or if you have been sketching for a long time –  you will find this 12 day experience in Portugal and Northern Spain magic and inspirational. Our sketch Holidays suit everyone and everyone learns every day in a supportive, caring and happy environment.

You will be amazed at what you can achieve when shown how.

The bond created within the group becomes very special as everyone learns from and encourages each other in being creative. A skill and a present to take home with you for life.

  • Lisbon 3 nights
  • Sintra 2 nights
  • Porto 3 nights
  • Santiago de Compostela 3 nights

3 and 4 star hotels on this 12 day tour with your Europe travel expert and tour manager Kate Stedman and 3 guest artists starting in Lisbon and ending in Santiago de Compostela.

Join us for 3 fun nights in Lisbon taking in the tram cars, the fabulous architecture, huge squares, fascinating history and the wonderful people of Lisbon. We meet the two Pedros for an inspiring demo sketch of their home town and tips on what to do to achieve the some of the tricks they use to such great effect in their sketches.

Then for 2 nights we head North by train to the magical perched town of SINTRA where the  Portuguese royals built their Summer palaces. This is a treat and a visual feast to sketch and journal. We avoid the crowds by spending 2 nights here and wandering around when all have departed back to Lisbon. The sketching opportunities are limitless! Sintra is built on an escarpment, with breathtaking views and is not to be missed.

Pena National Palace featured on our website, represents one of the best expressions in the world of 19th-century architectural Romanticism and was selected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal.
Read more on beautiful SINTRA here.

From Sintra we travel a short trip up the superb coastline of Portugal to the famous little town of Porto where the 2018 Urban Sketchers annual symposium was held.
Like nowhere else in the world this creative, winding picturesque town  is a wonderful blend of European architecture and English 19th century warehouses and port and sherry buildings. Wander the streets full of blue and white delft tiles from the Dutch influence and we will meet marvellous talented artist Renata Lahalle for daily sketch lessons and workshops.
We will dine at the wonderful scenic port, eat THE BEST pulpo and pastries in the world and sketch in fantastic surroundings.

Then we depart Portugal with a short drive - switch our watches forward an hour - and arrive in Spain to the ancient, mystical and beautiful town of Santiago de Compostela where for over 1200 years pilgrims have walked from across Europe into the huge Obradoiro square (pictured) to worship the bones of Saint James in the cathedral there. Renata will show us how to decorate and write in our travel journals as well as depict this historic city in sketches.

We will explore the wonders of this special town, feel plunged back in time and sketch nuns selling wafers, monks ringing bells, medieval architecture, weary pilgrims and maybe even sketch one arriving with his donkey!

Sadly, after our farewell dinner and then breakfast the next morning we must leave on June 13. Flights depart to Paris and other international cities from Santiago de Compostela airport. (Click THIS LINK to see a map of which cities you can fly out to from their airport).

Each day breakfast is provided for you and all accommodation has en-suite bathrooms (air-con of course in every room)

This is a holiday for all standards - everyone is catered for and it makes no difference if you have never held a pen except for work! Everyone gets the same enjoyment and reward out of such a lovely Sketch Holiday and all will love it.

Our tours teach a huge variety of tips, methods, shortcuts, fun ways of seeing and interpreting your travels and really gets the most out of your new-found love of sketching.
